MOTORCYCLE TRAVEL LOGISTICS
// EXPEDITION PROTOCOL
π Paperwork should never kill your engine. Learn to manage visas, customs, and transport so your only concern is the road ahead.
LOGISTICS STRATEGY ON THE ROAD.
Border crossings on a motorcycle require order, not luck. Over 6 years riding the world I've learned that the customs window is just as important as tyre pressure. Here's my method to ensure the paperwork never stops your motor.
THE ART OF BECOMING INVISIBLE TO BUREAUCRACY
Anyone can drop the clutch and ride off. The real challenge of a transcontinental journey isn't the miles β it's the windows. Logistics is the art of making the complex feel invisible, so you can enjoy the wild.
"I'VE SEEN TRIPS END ON A TOW TRUCK BECAUSE OF A ONE-DIGIT ERROR IN THE CHASSIS NUMBER ON THE TEMPORARY IMPORT PERMIT. DON'T REPEAT THAT MISTAKE."
PHASE 1: DOCUMENTATION & STRATEGY
"YOUR DOCUMENT FOLDER IS YOUR SECOND HELMET. IF IT FAILS, YOU'RE OUT OF THE GAME."
Border crossings aren't a good-faith formality β they're a technical verification process. A single digit error in your VIN or a miscalculated expiry date can mean your motorcycle gets confiscated. I've refined an organisational system that eliminates friction with customs officers.
THE MASTER ARCHIVE: PHYSICAL + DIGITAL CLONE
THE TACTICAL FOLDER
Forget cheap plastic envelopes. Use a rigid, waterproof folder organised with colour-coded dividers. When an officer sees order, they assume your papers are in order.
THE REPLICA-CLOUD
Everything scanned in high resolution: passport, title, licence, and vaccination records. Keep offline access. If you lose the physical folder, the trip doesn't end.
THE LAMINATED COPY STRATEGY
Never hand over originals on the road. High-quality laminated copies protect you against extortion. If they retain a copy, they have no power over you; if they retain the original, they control your trip.
CHECKLIST: THE UNTOUCHABLES
PASSPORT
Min. 18 months validity and blank pages.
TITLE OF OWNERSHIP
In your name (avoid notarial powers of attorney).
INTERNATIONAL LICENCE
Validated for motorcycle category (A).
BORDER INSURANCE
Know local requirements vs Green Card.
CPD (CARNET DE PASSAGE)
Required only for Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
PHASE 2: THE BORDER DANCE
"PERSON FIRST, THEN BIKE."
Crossing a border with your motorcycle isn't chaotic if you know the hierarchy of windows. The golden rule is universal: first you clear your right to enter as a person, then your vehicle. Here's the correct workflow so you never take a wrong step.
COUNTRY A // EL EXIT PROTOCOL
01. IMMIGRATION (Person)
Your first stop. Hand over your passport to get the official exit stamp. The officer will verify you haven't overstayed your visa.
02. CUSTOMS (TIP Cancellation)
With your stamped passport, head to the Customs window to officially cancel the Temporary Import Permit (TIP) for your bike.
Make sure you receive proof that the TIP has been cancelled. Without this, you'll be flagged as an 'evader' and could face confiscation of your bike in the future.
COUNTRY B // EL ENTRY PROTOCOL
01. IMMIGRATION (Person)
The absolute first step. You must get your entry stamp and tourist permit. The customs officer needs to see this active stamp to link the bike to your legal identity.
02. CUSTOMS (New TIP Issuance)
Verification: Check every digit of your chassis (VIN) and engine number. A transcription error can make your bike 'illegal' at the very first police checkpoint.
CHECKPOINT // 03
LOCAL INSURANCE
Mandatory in most countries. If there's no office at the border, they usually let you ride to the nearest city to get it. Never start riding through a country without insurance!
CHECKPOINT // 04
FUMIGATION & FEES
Always carry low-denomination dollars (1, 5, 10). Fumigation is quick β always demand the official receipt.
PRO TIP: THE UNBREAKABLE LINK (BIKE-RIDER)
"NEVER EXIT A COUNTRY WITHOUT YOUR MOTORCYCLE UNLESS YOU'VE COMPLETED AN OFFICIAL CUSTODY PROCEDURE."
If you stamp out with your passport but the bike stays in-country, you're breaking the terms of the temporary import.
You'll face massive fines for 'vehicle abandonment' or illegal importation β and potentially permanent confiscation.
If you must leave the bike due to force majeure, go to customs for a TIP Suspension or Official Fiscal Custody.
PHASE 3: WHERE THE ROAD ENDS // TRANSOCEANIC LOGISTICS
A moment will come when the road stops: the impassable DariΓ©n Gap, the expanse of the Atlantic, or the leap into Central Asia. At that point, your motorcycle stops being a vehicle and becomes "air freight" or "maritime cargo".
Your bike is no longer your companion β it's a HAZMAT (dangerous goods) item that requires international safety protocols.
This is the phase where the costliest mistakes happen. A poorly drafted Bill of Lading (BoL) , agents unfamiliar with the Carnet de Passage, or inadequate packaging can cause structural damage.
Ignorance generates demurrage costs of hundreds of dollars per day. Managing a crossing of this kind requires months of preparation and a reliable network of contacts at both ports.
QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR NEXT LOGISTICS JUMP?
Crossing the DariΓ©n or an ocean isn't just paying for freight β it's mastering customs. I've shipped Gloria by air and sea, and now I make sure your bike doesn't end up in legal limbo. You just focus on riding.
CARNET DE PASSAGE EN DOUANE (CPD): COMPLETE GUIDE
WHAT IS THE CPD AND WHAT IS IT FOR?
It's your 'Bike's Passport'. An international customs document that allows the temporary import of vehicles without paying local taxes at each border. It guarantees your vehicle will exit the country exactly as it entered.
WHERE IS IT MANDATORY?
- EGYPT (The strictest)
- IRAN & PAKISTAN
- INDIA & NEPAL
- SOUTH AFRICA
- AUSTRALIA
- NEW ZEALAND
- INDONESIA
THE COST OF FREEDOM
The CPD price is split into two components:
Between $250 and $400. This is the cost of the document and administration by the issuing club.
Usually the market value of the bike or a percentage. Can be arranged via Bank Guarantee or Cash Deposit.
OBTAINMENT PROTOCOL
CONTACT
Contact the Royal Automobile Club in your country (ADAC in Germany is the most accessible if yours doesn't issue them).
VALUATION
They determine the value of your bike and advise you of the exact bank guarantee amount required.
GUARANTEE
Arrange the bank guarantee or deposit the funds. No guarantee, no CPD.
DISPATCH
Once payment is verified, the carnet arrives by postal mail. Guard it like gold.
!RECOVERING YOUR MONEY: THE FINAL STAMP
Many travelers lose their deposit due to administrative errors at the end of the trip. To recover your money you need the DISCHARGE CERTIFICATE:
- βThe Exit Stamp: Every time you leave a CPD country, make sure the customs officer stamps and signs the 'Exit' coupon in the carnet.
- βInspection on Return: On returning to your home country, request a final customs inspection to confirm the motorcycle has physically returned.
- βReturn of the Physical Carnet: You must return the original physical booklet to the issuing club so they can cancel the bank guarantee.
From rider to rider...
Don't let the paperwork intimidate you. At first it looks like you're studying for a law exam, but once you cross that first border on your own and everything flows smoothly, you feel like you own the world.
The key is order. Keep your folders current, your copies done, and know what they'll ask at the next window β officers respect you more and you ride calmer. Don't let logistics kill your travel dreams; in the end it's just part of the adventure, like changing a tyre or finding somewhere to sleep.
Get the paperwork sorted, have everything ready, and go. The road is waiting on the other side of the customs window!
