WILD ROMANIA
The Transfagarasan (DN7C) is way more than twisted tarmac. It's a Communist-era piece of madness that crosses the Carpathians at over 2,000 meters. 56 miles of tight curves, unlit tunnels, and a brown-bear density that forces you to stay sharp. Stack the Transalpina on top and you have the ultimate Balkans combo. But heads up: Romania isn't Western Europe. The tarmac can vanish around a corner and the mountain weather is merciless.
CARPATHIAN MILESTONES
Bâlea Lake
The highest point of the route. A glacial lake ringed by peaks where the tarmac looks drawn by a madman.
Poenari Castle
The real fortress of Vlad the Impaler (Dracula). 1,480 steps to actual history.
Vidraru Dam
A 166-meter concrete giant. The access tunnel will drop you straight into a James Bond film.
Transalpina
The big sister. Higher (2,145 m), faster, and impeccable tarmac that runs through the clouds.
