THE HAUL ROAD TO THE ARCTIC OCEAN

The Dalton Highway — Alaska Route 11 — was never built for tourists. It's a supply line for the Prudhoe Bay oil fields, and that's exactly how it rides: 666 miles of gravel, calcium mud, semi-trucks that yield to no one, and a silence so deep it gets in your head. No cell service. No mechanics. Three fuel stops in 620 miles. If you want a route that tests your bike and your nerve, this is it. Show up unprepared and the Arctic will collect.

MILESTONES OF THE FAR NORTH

01

Arctic Circle

The line that marks the start of midnight-sun country. A geographic milestone every long-distance rider has on the list.

02

Atigun Pass

The highest point on the road (4,739 ft / 1,444 m) crossing the Brooks Range. Avalanches, snow, and views that make the gravel worth it.

03

Yukon River Camp

First stop after Fairbanks. Crossing one of North America's biggest rivers — your last taste of real civilization.

04

Deadhorse

End of the road. An industrial outpost of shipping containers and heavy machinery on the edge of the Arctic Ocean. The finish line.

05

Brooks Range

Bare, savage mountains that look like another planet. Home to caribou, grizzlies, and wolves. Alaska at its rawest.

06

The Pipeline

The Trans-Alaska Pipeline runs alongside you the entire way. A massive feat of engineering in the middle of nothing.

WHAT THE NORTH WILL DO TO YOU

The Dalton doesn't forgive mistakes. This isn't a road trip — it's an industrial expedition through hostile territory.

  • 01
    Calcium chloride is glue

Trucks spray the road with calcium chloride to keep dust down. When it rains, it turns into slick, grease-like mud that sticks to the bike and eats radiators, brakes and electrical.

  • 02
    Semi-trucks own the road

They get absolute priority. They throw blinding dust clouds and fist-sized rocks. Don't get out of the way and you're done.

  • 03
250 miles between you and the next drop of fuel

Between Coldfoot and Deadhorse there's nothing. You need a 250-mile minimum range or extra fuel cans. Zero margin.

  • 04
Arctic mosquitoes are a real nightmare

Not a joke. The moment you stop, thousands of aggressive mosquitoes swarm you. You need specific gear to survive even a piss break.

SLEEP WHERE NIGHT FINDS YOU. UP HERE, OVERNIGHT LOGISTICS ARE A SURVIVAL CALL.

WHY THIS GUIDE AND NOT ANOTHER?

Because on the Dalton, one planning mistake can be fatal — or at minimum cost you thousands of dollars in rescue fees. This guide doesn't sell you pretty landscapes (the road has them). It talks about survival, fuel logistics and riding tactics on one of the most treacherous roads on earth. It's the difference between reaching the Arctic Ocean and getting stuck in a calcium-mud ditch.

ARCTIC TIP

Wash the bike with fresh water every chance you get, even when it feels pointless. Haul Road calcium chloride is extremely corrosive to metals and electrical systems. The guide has the key spots for emergency maintenance on the road.
